Capillaries are blood vessels in the walls of the alveoli. While in the capillaries, carbon dioxide is given off into the alveoli by the capillary wall and oxygen is taken up in the alveoli by the blood. The lymph nodes filter substances that travel through the lymphatic fluid and contain lymphocytes that aid the body in fighting diseases and infections.
