Going by the actions of Rainsford, he is the protagonist of the story. ON the other hand, General Zaroff is the antagonist of the story.

What motivates the antagonist to engage in evil behavior?

General Zaroff is the antagonist because his character seems to put Rainsford in a position of conflict, causing him to doubt everything he once believed in.

The key motivation for General Zaroff's antagonistic attitude was that he simply was seeking a challenge that was more interesting that hunting animals.

If Genral Zaroff had been able to overcome his dark impulses, the story would have lost it's suspense, hence the drive to see what happens at the end.
