Why is it important to eat complex carbohydrates instead of simple carbohydrates at meals?

All i know is that complex carbohydrates are higher in fiber they are good options for weight control and people of types 2 diabetes. for ex. (whole wheat bread,cereal,corn,oats,peas, and rice.)
