Many tasks in chemistry involve separating mixtures. For example, crude oil by itself has very few uses, but many important substances are separated from crude oil. In this investigation we will attempt to separate sand from salt water, and salt from water. If you do not have access to sand, you can use small pebbles or BBs.

Before you begin the experiment, hypothesize whether or not you can separate sand from salt water using filter paper. After the experiment summarize your findings in a scientific report. Upload your report below in question 1.

These supplies are needed:

salt
water
sand
a measuring cup
a balance
filter paper
funnel
plastic spoon
two beakers or glasses
Measure 5 grams of salt and 10 grams of sand using the balance.
Mix together the salt and sand in a beaker or glass.
Add one half-cup of water to the salt-sand mixture.
Stir the mixture with the plastic spoon until all the salt is completely dissolved.
To filter the mixture fold the filter in half to form a semi-circle. Fold it again which creates the shape of a triangle. Place the filter paper in the funnel and open one layer of the filter paper and spread it out onto one side of the funnel, and the other three layers onto the other side of the funnel. You may want to wet the filter paper with water so that the filter paper lays flat against the sides of the funnel. Carefully pour the salt water -sand mixture into the funnel and drain the liquid into a beaker or glass.
Remove the filter paper from the funnel and lay it out flat to allow the sand to dry.
