Curly's wife asks him if he likes soft things and Lennie nods, explaining that he loves touching soft things.
Curly's wife laughs and says she loves soft things too. She begins to tell Lennie that her hair is very soft and he can touch it if he wants to.
Lennie grabs her hair harshly since he loves it. He keeps telling her it's very soft. Curly's wife starts screaming because Lenny is holding her hair too tight.
Lennie is frightened and covers her mouth with his hand, telling her to be quite or George will hear and get even more mad.
Lennie ends up accidentally breaking Curly's wife's neck and her body ends up "flopping like a fish"
Lennie realizes she is unalived and hides her body under some straw, then runs away for fear of George not letting him tend the rabbits.
Carlson, Whit, Curley, and Crooks come into the barn and find Curly's wife dead. They immediately know it's Lennie.
Now they're out and about, looking to shoot Lennie.
