Holiday Lab A
Scientists use many tools in the process of scientific investigation. Data tables
and graphs can be useful tools in the illustration of relationships between the variables
in an experiment. Changes in the dependent variable occur because of the independent
variable.
This activity uses data recorded by a student who was performing an experiment
to investigate the relative activity of an enzyme at various pH values. You will create a
data table to organize the information that was collected during the student's
experiment. You will then create a line graph to visually present the data from your
table. The data collected during the experiment is as follows:
At pH of 2, enzyme activity was 10 mg/min
At pH of 8, enzyme activity was 50 mg/min
O
At pH of 12, enzyme activity was 10 mg/min
At pH of 4, enzyme activity was 20 mg/min
At pH of 6, enzyme activity was 40 mg/min
At pH of 10, enzyme activity was 40 mg/min
Procedure:
1. Label each column of the data table with an appropriate heading. The
independent variable should be placed in the left column, while the dependent
variable should be placed in the right column.
2.
3.
Fill in the left column first so that the values for that variable begin with the
lowest numbers at the top and increase as you fill in the rest of the column.
Fill in the right column so that the values are correctly paired with the
information on the left. Be careful that each data pair is exactly as presented
above.
4. Using the information from the data table that you have prepared begin filling in
the grid provided by labeling each axis with the appropriate variable. The
independent variable should always be placed on the x-axis, while the dependent
variable should always be placed on the y-axis.
5.
Fill in the values for a scale on each axis being sure to evenly space your
numbers so that they fit within the grid provided.
6. Plot the data and then connect the points with a line.

How do I do the data table

Respuesta :

The relative enzyme activity is the dependent variable in the experiment as it depends on the pH of the medium which is the independent variable.

What are variables?

Variables in a research are quantities which can be changed by the experimenter.

An independent variable produces a change in the dependent variable when the experimenter changes its value.

In the given study, pH is the independent variable while enzyme activity is the dependent variable as a change in the pH produces a change in the enzyme activity.

The attached picture shows a graph of Enzyme activity against pH.

Therefore, the relative enzyme activity is the dependent variable in the experiment as it depends on the pH of the medium which is the independent variable.
