A woodworker fashions a chair such that the legs come down at an angle to the floor as shown in the figure. If the legs are 28 inches long, how far apart are they along the floor?

Respuesta :

The legs are 28 inches long, they are  45.386 inches when they along the floor.

What is trigonometry?

The branch of mathematics concerned with specific functions of angles and their application to calculations

In can be seen that, Δ BDE is right angled triangle.

Also,  Δ AED is right angled triangle.

Using Angle Sum property in both triangles, we have

angle BDE = 180-(33+90)

                  = 180- 123

                 = 67

angle ADE= 72-67

                = 5

Now, sin 5° = x/28

         0.087*28= x

         x = 2.436

Similarly, cos 5° = DE /28

               DE = 27.8936

Now, tan 33° = DE / h-x

          h -x= 27.8936 /tan 33°

          h-x= 27.8936  /0.6494

          h= 42.95+ x

          h= 42.95 + 2.436

           h = 45.386 inches

Hence, far apart are they along the floor = 45.386 inches.
