Passage
Compared to the North American continent, which was formed over millions of years through the gradual
shifting of large plates, the Hawaiian Islands were created rather abruptly. The Hawaiian Islands are the
result of volcanic explosions deep within the Earth that forced liquid magma to flow upwards to the Earth's
surface. Once on the surface, magma cools and forms hard rock. When the rock emerges from the
surrounding sea, an island is born.
