  • Proteins are known a building blocks of body. They cannot get directly into the blood as they are large in size . Proteins consists of carbon , hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sometimes Sulphur.
  • One should take 10-15% of proteins in his diet . Proteins provide 4.1 cal/ g energy. A normal person should have protein intake of 1g/kg of his body weight.
  • Proteins undergoes breakdown and are converted into amino acids.
  • There are 20 amino acids found in proteins in which 10 are essential and remaining are non essential .

Functios of proteins -

  1. Proteins help in the maintenance of body tissue by developing new ones and repairing the present ones.
  2. It maintains the pH level and osmotic balance in body.
  3. it helps in the formation of enzymes , hormones , antibodies and hemoglobin.
  4. it help in transporting certain molecules.
