How do you do an explanatory response?
It is important to note that the objective of an explanatory text is to explain. Hence, it is important to be:
- Clear
- Direct to the point and
- Unambiguous.
Hence, the response is as follows:
In her poem "On Being Brought from Africa to America", Phillis Wheatley Peters, uses the word "Scornful" to describe how blacks where viewed. "Some view our sable race with scornful eye,..."
Using a metaphorical reference to Cain (the Biblical character that slew his brother) she describes all those who think Blacks are inferior as those who should also be "refin'd" and join "th' angelic train.
Thus, in a revers logic, she proves that the racist stereotype is false and that it is those who view others as inferior that are actually "black" and need to be refined.
Furthermore, in the first and third lines, you would find the following words "mercy" and "savior" respectively. Deductive reasoning allows the readers to infer that such words do not sit with the family of other words used line five that is "Scornful".
The submission of Wheatley thus, could be summarized as follows:
Mercy does not enslave. Salvation does not scorn, at least, this was the attitude of the God that she has been taught to know as given in line 1-3.
