The walls of the airways become weak and inelastic owing to the damaged caused by repeated infections which causes air trapping .So during expiration phase the pressure from the trapped air in the bullae may compress adjacent healthy tissues causing occlusion into the tissues. This causes prolong time in exhaling out the air leads to shortness of breath . COPD type-1 i.e. emphysema is also known as blue bloaters as it leads to cyanosis ( bluish discolouration of skin tissue due to less oxygen supply).
