It is a tension created by the attraction of molecules to the surface by the molecules in a bulk of a solution.
The attraction force present between water molecules is cohesion force.
The phenomenon of surface tension provides two major characteristics to the water:
- It makes the surface molecules to be held together
- Responsible for formation of water droplet
Plants take water from soil using it's roots , and water is travelling through the xylene tissues present in a plant , so the cohesion forces present in water helps it to travel to the higher places in plants.
While in case of animals, this attraction forces increases the surface density which helps to insects to walk on to the water surface.
