What is blood system hierarchy?
- The system was organized as a racial hierarchy according to the amount of Spanish blood each person had .The less Spanish blood they had, the lower they were placed in the system. The caste system was more than a simple class system, it was a social and racial classification.
- As if that were inhumane enough, each caste had strict rules that governed their wealth, their careers, their dress, and even the friendships they could have. The caste system is a clear example of systemic racism and exclusion of people of color.
- The peninsula was Spaniards of pure Spanish descent. They were also the most powerful group in the caste system. After them came the Criollos, born in Nueva Spain to Spanish descent.
- They were considered second-class and held positions of little power within government, such as local councils. In third place was a Mestizo, a Spaniard and his native American descendant.
- Then came the mulattoes of African and Spanish descent. Life for the mulatto was much more difficult. Second, pure Native Americans were the last people in the system. At the end of the caste system were the Africans and the slave people. As we know they lived an inferior life.
