Physiologic jaundice.
Jaundice in newborn babies is called physiologic jaundice, and it typically appears on the second or third day of life.
What is Physiologic jaundice ?
Physiologic jaundice is caused by a combination of increased bilirubin production secondary to accelerated destruction of erythrocytes,
- Decreased excretory capacity secondary to low levels of ligandin in hepatocytes, and low activity of the bilirubin-conjugating enzyme uridine diphosphoglucuronyltransferase (UDPGT).
- Physiological jaundice will resolve by itself once the baby's liver is functioning at full speed. In babies where jaundice levels are very high in the days after birth, treatment using blue lights (phototherapy) may be required.
