Online communication allows people the ability to create new identities. People can switch genders, race, age, etc. since the visual and auditory cues used in face-to-face encounters are not used. Do you think this practice is helpful, harmful, or both to people’s self-concept? Does it create ethical issues when presenting oneself as something they are not? Why or why not? What might be some reasons people do this? How could this be both useful and not useful?

The question of whether or not the above practices are harmful or helpful is totally dependent on the reason why they are being done.

For example, witnesses to serious crimes and highly dangerous criminals may opt to alter their visual identities for sakes of protection. Alternatively, the criminals may also alter their identities to escape from the justice.

Hence, it is right to state that this does create ethical issues. The best practice maybe for society to come up with a system that keeps track of what kind of identity people switch from and to.
