One well-known instance involves a youngster by the name of Genie. She had little or no interaction with her father or other family members as a child and had a socially isolated upbringing. Even in comparison to the majority of other cases, the level and length of isolation were high. When she was 13 years old, she was placed in care. She could not speak. Her speech at first was a series of grunts, muttered.
She has however demonstrated an amazing capacity to learn to communicate and, in particular, to comprehend speech, over time. Particularly in terms of perception and comprehension, she learnt the distinctions between singular and plural nouns, negatives, possessives, and a variety of prepositions. She probably never acquired adult language, but her development is still impressive.
Although early development is crucial for language, it seems that some speech learning abilities can last into old age.
