It began as a single song called "High Mountain and Flowing Water." Both of them were inspired by Yu Boya, a famed guqin master, and Zhong Ziqi, a woodsman friend. The Spring and Autumn Periods saw Yu achieve greatness as a musician. Zhong, a rural man, and he grew close over the years because Zhong always got the subtleties of what he was trying to say with his music.
Chinese culture associates cherished relationship with "High Mountain and Flowing Water." Although Yu played a different version of "High Mountains and Flowing Water" about 3,000 years ago, the piece nevertheless expresses the same idea—the majesty of lofty mountains and the might of flowing water—in its present-day performance.
