The Heiji Monogatari Emaki is an Emaki or( painted narrative handscroll) .
Emakimono is a form of art which originated in Japan itself during 6-7th Century through trade with Chinese empire . It attracted the aristocracy mainly.
This particular handscroll belongs to 13th century Japan, which coincides with the Kamakura period of Japanese history.
This illuminated manuscript narrates the events of Heiji rebellion . Which was a precursor to bigger Genpei war between Tiara and Minamoto clans.
Now, sadly only three of the original emakimono is still there narrating the rebellion. The first scroll is in Museum of fine arts, Boston USA. The second scroll is in a art museum in Tokyo . The third scroll is in National Museum Tokyo.
