The Via Sacra was the main street of ancient Rome, which ran through the roman forum.
From the top of Capitoline Hill, via some of the most significant religious monuments of the Forum (where it is the widest roadway), and on to the Colosseum, the Via Sacra served as ancient Rome's principal thoroughfare.
The road was a section of the ancient route of the Roman Triumph, which started outside the city and passed by the Roman Forum. The road served as the backdrop for many of Rome's historical triumphs and tragedies, as well as the somber religious celebrations, the great victories of victorious generals, and the daily crowd gathering in the basilicas to converse, gamble, conduct business, or obtain justice. Later, it was paved, and under Nero, it was bordered by colonnades.
