In the 1972 presidential election, Nixon had a commanding lead in the polls, but his operatives carried out a number of unlawful activities to weaken the opposition.
They came to light when a congressional investigation and the arrest of five burglars following the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters.
Nixon vehemently denied any role in the intrusion, but the House of Representatives started the impeachment process after a tape revealed that Nixon was aware of the White House's connection to the Watergate intrusions soon after they took place. Nixon resigned from office in order to avoid being removed by Congress.
Nevertheless, some academics contend that Nixon "has been overly vilified for his shortcomings and underappreciated for his virtues."
