The slow decrease in memory as one ages is an example of a/n intra-individual difference.
Reaction time intra-individual variability (RT IIV) is regarded as a measure of how well the central nervous system is working. In neurodegenerative disorders or after traumatic brain damage, such variability is increased. Additionally, it has been hypothesised that healthy ageing will rise with age.
RT IIV was higher in older (60+) persons compared to younger (20-39) and middle-aged (40-59) adults. In choice RT tasks compared to simple RT tasks, age effects were more pronounced. Effect sizes were bigger for comparisons between older and younger individuals than between older and middle-aged adults for all measures of RT IIV, showing that age-related increases in RT IIV are not just present in the elderly. Additionally, raw RT IIV measurements had greater effect sizes than RT-mean adjusted RT IIV measures.
