Exempt research on human subjects is study that poses no risk or very little harm to people and is exempt from the majority of the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects standards, but it is still considered research and requires IRB review for an exemption determination.
Any research that uses identifiable private information to systematically gather data or information on living subjects with the aim of creating or enhancing generally applicable knowledge is known as "human subjects research." Both medical (clinical) and non-medical (such as social science) research can use human subjects.
