Updrafts dominate the cumulonimbus cloud during the cumulus stage in the life cycle of an air mass thunderstorm.
Although first cumulus clouds frequently perish, their deaths are not in vain. In the same column as the initial cumulus, new cumulus clouds frequently form, benefiting from the water vapor from earlier-evaporating cloud particles.
Even if entrainment into the newly forming cumulus still continues, the air that is mixing into the cloud is more humid than before, which, as you may remember, reduces the possibility of net evaporation (and evaporational cooling).
A series of cumulus clouds can now develop and dissipate in a single column of air if there is an adequate supply of low-level moisture and persistent positively buoyant parcels throughout time.
