The famous violins made by Antonio Stradivari in the late 1600s may owe their superior acoustical properties to the dense wood grown during a 70-year global cold spell called the maunder minimum.
It is estimated that Stradivari produced 1,116 instruments, of which 960 were violins. From 450 he has about 650 instruments stored, including 512 violins. His instrument is the best and most valuable collector's item ever made.
Antonio Stradivari was born in 1644 and developed his business in Cremona, Italy until his death in 1737. His interpretation of violin geometry and design has served as a conceptual model for violin makers for over 250 years.
