Fludrocortisone is a synthetic mineralocorticoid produced by the adrenal glands. Synthetic corticosteroids are exogenous analogues of naturally occurring glucocorticoids and mineral corticoids produced by the adrenal glands.
Corticosteroids are natural hormones made by the adrenal cortex which are important for maintaining good health. There are two types of corticosteroids, the glucocorticoids and the mineralocorticoids. The major corticosteroids are aldosterone and cortisol and they are secreted from the adrenal cortex .The major adrenal hormones are synthesized at different locations of adrenal cortex like glucocorticoids (particularly cortisol) is made in the zona fasciculata (ZF), androgens and estrogens in the zona reticularis (ZR), and aldosterone in the zona glomerulosa (ZG).
