The biological theoretical model considered a newer field of study than the psychological theoretical model because brain scans can tell us about brain structure, the field of genetics is relatively young and because we have more powerful microscopes than we have had in the past.

To explain the potential biological basis for a particular mental disorder, based on animal models, inferences derived from drug reactions, and advanced research methods using advanced imaging experimental techniques and biochemical assays, several hypotheses have been proposed.
