Biological membranes are selectively permeable as it allows only some substances and molecules to pass into or leave the cell. Selective permeability is defined as ability of the cell membrane to allow certain substances to pass through while keeping others out. Molecules can selectively pass through the cell membrane, small hydrophobic molecules and gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide cross membranes rapidly. Small polar molecules, such as water and ethanol, can also pass through membranes, but they do so more slowly.
Plasma membranes allow certain substances to enter and leave a cell, while preventing harmful material from entering and essential material from leaving. In other words, plasma membranes are selectively permeable they allow some substances through but not others.
