When the American colonies were first settled, Native Americans and European colonists found
themselves competing for natural resources, land, and food. In 1833, as the first wave ofββββββββ
took over the nation, President Andrew Jackson seized Native American lands in the
states ofβββββββ-

Native Americans were forced to move to the
midwest; their journey would later be known as theββββββ
ofββββββββ.
When these Native Americans were resettled in the Midwest, many tribes were condensed and given
lands within the Native American territory. Instead of giving them an equivalent amount of land, these
tribes saw their land holdings shrink; additionally, many tribes were moved to places that they knew
nothing about and at times, multiple tribal nations would be forced to share land.
After the Civil War, a second wave of manifest destiny swept the nation. As theβββββββ-Railroad was completed, more and more Americans looked to the west for opportunity. The Native
American territory in Oklahoma that was created by theββββββββ ββββββββAct of
1833 was now land that was lucrative. It could be used for grazing and other agricultural purposes.
Additionally, it was a commonly held view amongst Americans that tribal lands being held in a
communal manner was tooβββββββor uncivilized.
As such, starting in the late 1870's and early 1880's, American government officials began thinking
about ways to encourage Native Americans to convert from a belief in communal ownership of tribal
land into Americans who believed in capitalism. One way they encouraged this was through creating
a system ofββββββββ-,where each family or individual could receive a specific parcel of land.
Additionally, if Native Americans were willing to move out of the tribe and live separately, they would
receive Americanβββββββββ-Thus, a major cause of the Dawes Act wasβββββββββ-The act itself created a system ofβββββββββ-this split up the Native territory amongst many different Native American
individuals or families and served the hopeful effect to "westernize" or civilize the Native Americans.
