Three main factors account for changes in the American family: more women in the workforce, a high divorce rate, and an increase in the age at which people marry.
Traditionally, the typical American family has been viewed as a nuclear family (husband, wife, and children) with the extended family living apart. Although the nuclear family structure is still prevalent today, it can no longer be considered a social norm due to the rise in divorce, remarriage, cohabitation of couples, and unmarried births.
Many family dynamics in America are influenced by individualism. The notion that you are what you make of yourself and who you choose permeates much of culture (see Individualism in Core Concepts). People are therefore expected to be independent and accountable for their own decisions.
For instance, it's rather typical for American parents to emphasize their kids' independence and encourage them to pursue their own goals, even if those goals don't align with what the family had in mind.
