The olfactory glomeruli contain tufted cells. They get information from olfactory epithelium receptor cells, which are present in parts of the nose that can detect smells. Projection neurons refer to both mitral cells and tufted cells. The impulses from the glomeruli are sent deeper into the brain by projection neurons.

  • The tuft cells and mitral cells of the glomerulus process the odour signals in the local circuits of the glomerulus after receiving the olfactory sensory inputs. The odour signals are further processed by the projection neurons in the local circuits of the EPL before being sent to the olfactory cortex.
