People are able to believe in illusion and accept it as reality as often the truth is unpleasant and illusion gives more comfort.

Plato in his Allegory of the Cave gives a parable of how people live in an illusory world since their birth, and the difficulties of freeing them and making them see and embrace the truth.

The allegory talks of people chained in a cave, facing the cave wall on which they see the shadows of people who happen to walk by the mouth of the cave. They believe this is the ultimate reality, and resist attempts to free them and make them see the real world outside.

So too in everyday life, people live in illusions and resist accepting the various truths of social and political life, and confronting their personal problems honestly.
