The subduction zone is the area where two of the Earth's tectonic plates meet and one slides beneath the other. Along the subduction zone are where island arcs are formed, which are chains of islands created by volcanoes.
As a result of plate tectonic processes, island arcs are created. Another piece of crust, usually the edge of a continental plate or another piece of oceanic crust, gets subducted beneath it. As the subducted plate melts, magma is produced, and eventually volcanism occurs.
