Approximately 6% to 16% of registered nurses who are currently working in the United States are thought to be chemically impaired, according to the American Nurses Association (ANA).

Additionally, according to the ANA, 67% of discipline cases brought before state boards of nursing involve drugs. The issue of nurse impairment impacts not just the individual nurse but also the public and the profession's integrity because of the behaviours of chemically impaired nurses.

Changes made by a nurse who is impairment include:

  • attendance
  • Time management issues
  • frequent absenteeism or tardiness, frequent breaks and leaving the unit without warning
  • prescription errors, and a strong defensiveness when confronted with those faults
  • a keen interest in opioids, a willingness to always purchase these drugs for colleague nurses;
  • a tendency to claim that many patients complain about inefficient pain treatment (it could signal the diversion of narcotics and impairment)
  • Poor or illogical charting (not handwriting)
