Yes, people still cling to religion because science does not provide the basis nor the answers to essential aspects of human existence.
For example, the existence of moral values cannot be demonstrated in the same way atoms are, yet moral rules are essential to harmonious functioning of society. Religion gives peace of mind and hope to individuals, particularly those who are in pain and suffering.
