An exoenzyme is an extracellular enzyme that may be involved in hydrolysis of nutrient macromolecules or damage to host tissues.
Exoenzyme are the enzymes that act outside the cells in which they are produced. For example the enzymes involved in the digestion of food including amylases, chitinase, ligninases and lipases are all exoenzymes. It is produced by both prokaryotic organisms and eukaryotic organisms.
Macromolecules are the molecules which are formed by the combination of more number of molecules.
Exoenzymes are also used by the microbes to breakdown these macromolecules in the environment into simpler form so that they can be utilized. Also, they can be used to secrete enzymes to damage the host in which they are residing.
