Red cell indices have been added to a client's scheduled blood work. the results will allow the nurse to identify the size, shape, and physical characteristics of the RBCs and anaemia

  • Red blood cell (RBC) indices are individual components of a common blood test known as a complete blood count (CBC). The CBC is used to assess the number and physical features of the many types of cells found in your blood.
  • RBCs, white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets are suspended in your plasma and make up blood. Platelets are cells that allow clots to form. Haemoglobin, which is found in RBCs, transports oxygen throughout your body to all of your tissues and organs. RBCs are pale red and are coloured by haemoglobin. It's shaped like a doughnut, but instead of a hole, it features a narrower section in the centre. RBCs are typically the same colour, size, and shape. Certain disorders, like anaemia however, can induce changes that limit their capacity to function normally.
