A nurse would educate the patient about the common side-effects, actions, indications, and adverse common reactions of ACE inhibitors when the patient is taking them for the first time.

ACE inhibitors, Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, like Captopril are used to treat hypertension and heart diseases. These work by dilating the blood vessels and decreasing the blood pressure.

Some of the common side effects include hypotension, dizziness, proteinuria, angioedema (cough), agranulocytosis, anaphylactoid reactions, etc.

The nursing intervention includes the following:

● Access the patient for symptoms of hypertension, heart diseases, and diabetes

● Administering the medication on an empty stomach, about 1-2 hours before meal

● Avoiding ACE with other potassium-increasing medications that may lead to lithium toxicity

● Avoiding ACE with NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) - they suppress the functioning of ACE

● Reporting a health care provider if any of the side effects persist for a long time
