When a rod-shaped bacterium is short and plump it is called a: coccobacillus and if it is gently curved it is called a: vibrio.

Bacteria display a huge variety in shape, size, as well as arrangement of colonies. The three common shapes seen in bacteria are:-

  • Coccus: It is used to describe bacterial cells that are spherical or round in shape. They can be perfect spheres or oval or bean-shaped.

  • Bacillus: It is used to describe a bacterial cell which is cylindrical or rod-shaped. However, a rod which is short and plump is called a coccobacillus ,whereas it is termed as a vibrio if it is gently curved.

  • Spirillum: It is used to refer to a bacterial cell possessing the shape of a spiral cylinder.
