Certain features of viruses enable them to evolve rapidly. flu viruses evolve, evading detection by host immune cells, by re-assorting genes of multiple viral strains during viral replication.
A method by which flu viruses can change is termed as 'antigenic drift'. It includes tiny variations or mutations in the genes of certain viruses such as influenza viruses. It can result in an alteration in the surface proteins of the virus i.e. Hemagglutinin (HA) as well as Neuraminidase (NA).
When antigenic drift takes place, the host's immune system fails to recognize and ward off illness produced by the mutated flu viruses.
Consequentially, an individual becomes vulnerable to flu infection again, since antigenic drift has altered the virus’ antigenic features to such an extent that an individual's existing antibodies cannot identify and counteract the newer flu viruses.
