- A savanna, sometimes known as a savannah, is a mixed woodland-grassland habitat distinguished by trees that are sufficiently spread such that the canopy does not shut. The open canopy enables enough light to reach the ground to maintain an uninterrupted herbaceous layer dominated by grasses. Savannas have an open canopy despite their dense tree cover.
- South American savanna types cerrado sensu stricto and cerrado dense typically have tree densities comparable to or greater than that found in South American tropical forests, whereas Eastern Australian sclerophyll forests have average tree densities of around 100 per hectare, comparable to savannas in the same region. Savannas are further distinguished by seasonal water availability, with the bulk of rainfall falling within a single season.
