Thirty percent of rural America lacks high speed internet

It is the pandemic that has laid bare the importance of internet and having a high speed connection, as Americans were forced to conduct lives online. Yet, millions of people especially in rural and tribal lands lacked the the kind of fast and reliable connection. In 2020, separate legislators required the Federal Communication Commission to update its broadband access maps. The Federal Communication Commission defines the broadband as an internet connection with minimum speed of 25 megabits per second download and 3 Mbps upload.

Also, if the infrastructure is built another problem it faces is its availability. This suggests that in spite of advances in both policy and technology, the barriers to internet adoption existing in both rural communities are complex and stubborn. While the digital divide appears to be closing for some demographic communities, the gap between rural and urban population has remained remarkably consistent.
