An intron is a portion of mRNA that is about 1,000 nucleotides long and that is removed before translation.
In eukaryotic cells such as photoreceptors, expression of genes is frequently regulated mainly at the level of transcription.
When a eukaryotic gene is transcribed in the nucleus, the primary transcript i.e. newly made RNA molecule is, not so far, regarded a mRNA or messenger RNA. Rather, it is a premature molecule termed as a pre-mRNA.
Maximum pre-mRNA molecules contain segments which are separated from the molecule i.e. introns, as well as portions that are connected together to create the ultimate mRNA i.e. exons. This process is known as splicing.
