The author uses flashbacks during the entire story because he is describing something that happened in his past and also when he starts remembering and describing the journey they had to travel through to escape.

He uses flash forward when he starts imagining what could happen to him if he tried to escape and all the other consequences and how he distrusted Shestakov for escaping with him.
