The convex mirror has been deployed in paintings by the Georgians. But its wide use came in 15th century Northern Europe where it was depicted in interiors and art. Jan Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait was the earliest use of convex mirrors in a European home. Petrus Christus and Hans Memling were other prominent artists who used this method.
The convex mirror is used to present a certain specific perspective which extends a painting’s space into the viewer’s space. Thus, the viewer has a much richer experience than she would if the mirror had not been included. In the Arnolfini Portrait, viewers can see not only the couple but also two other people in the room reflected through the convex mirror.
