Job enlargement involves giving a worker a larger portion of a total task through horizontal loading. The additional work is on the same skill level and responsibility of the original job. Job enrichment involves an increase in the level of responsibility for planning and coordination through vertical loading.
The difference between job enrichment and job enlargement is quality and quantity. Job enrichment means improvement, or an increase with the help of upgrading and development, whereas job enlargement means to add more duties, and an increased workload.
Job enlargement involves combining various activities at the same level in the organization and adding them to the existing job. It is also called the horizontal expansion of job activities.
