Due to the law of definite proportion, the mass of each element in a compound depends on the quantity of the compound.

The law of definite proportions, also known as Proust's law or the law of constant composition, holds that no matter the source or technique of manufacture, a given chemical compound always includes its constituent elements in a fixed ratio (by mass). The amount of each element in a compound determines the percent by mass of that element in the compound. for example a sample of 50 grams of carbon monoxide, for instance, will include 21.5 grams of carbon and 28.5 grams of oxygen.
