Covalent bonds are the most common type of bond formed between two non-metals. When a metal and a non-metal come together, ionic bonds are created. It is possible for covalent bonds of any type to form between two non-metals, including polar and non-polar ones. Additionally, they can be coordinate covalent or dative, in which case the shared electrons are provided by just one element.

What is Covalent Bond ?

Covalent bonding typically takes place between nonmetals. Covalent bonding is the type of connection that holds the atoms in a polyatomic ion together. Each bonding atom must contribute one electron to create a covalent link.

Covalent connections are created because they give atoms a more stable arrangement of electrons. Look closely at the oxygen atoms in the figure above. Six valence electrons are present in each oxygen atom on its own.
