Compounds with nearly identical molar masses often have very different physical properties. Choose the compound with the higher value for each of the following properties, and explain your choice.(a) Solubility in water: chloroethane or methylethylamine

Respuesta :

Chloroethane is insoluble in water . and methylethylamine is soluble in water .

As we know , alkyl halides are polar but insoluble  in water due to their in ability to hydrogen bonds with water molecules. the magnitude of attractive interactions between alkyl halide and water molecules remains dominated by that of inter-molecular hydrogen bonding in water .

Thus , chloroethane is insoluble in water .

But methylethylamine is soluble in water , because of intermolecular hydrogen bond .lower amines are soluble in water due to the formation of hydrogen bond . however solubility decreases with increase in the size of non-polar hydrocarbon part .
