Addition reaction do not occur readily with benzene .

As we know addition reaction  takes at the double bond site .

But in case of the benzene ring , the double bond is not have a particular position . there occurs resonance , means the pi- electrons are delocalized to make the structure more stable . thus benzene is resonating structure .

The delocalization  of pi-electron is called as resonance .

Thus benzene does not show addition reaction because of resonance stabilization .

Addition reaction :

CH3-CH=CH2 + HBr ==> CH3-CH(Br) -CH3

this is due to Markownikoff's rule .
