In A Servant to Servants, two family members who have encountered mental health issues contrast their respective experiences to show how the themes of the poem are related to mental disease. The narrator contrasts her circumstances and treatment with those his uncle went through.

Beginning the poem, the author describes her predicament, saying, "I can't communicate my sentiments anymore," and the frustration it causes her.

She then elaborates on how she arrived to that frame of mind "I need a break from cooking for 50 hungry hired men; there, I said it. And cleaning up after them because there are some things that just can't be finished once they are started.

"She then remembers that she had been staying at the state's asylum while receiving treatment for her ailment. She then adds that it's not surprising because mental illness runs in her family. Then she describes how her uncle, who was "his Father's brother," had been "crazy since childhood" and had done it for the love of a lady.
